A good custom pet embroidered hat comes down to four things: starting with a clear photo of your pet, having the portrait adapted well for embroidery, choosing a cap style that suits you, and being able to review the artwork before production begins. If those four elements are in place, you're in a good position to end up with a hat you'll actually want to wear.
At 999Tee Canada, each custom pet hat is made to order from your photo. Here's what you need to know before you place your order. You can also browse the full range in the Custom Pet Portrait Caps collection.
Start With the Right Pet Photo
The photo you submit is the starting point for your embroidery artwork, so the clearer it is, the more your pet's character can come through in the final design.
A photo where your pet's face is well-lit, in focus, and facing toward the camera tends to work well. Facial markings, colour patterns and the general expression of your pet are all easier to capture when they're visible and clear in the photo. A cluttered background won't necessarily cause problems, since the artwork process focuses on your pet, but a simpler background makes the subject easier to work with.
Photos where the face is partly obscured, heavily shadowed or very small in the frame can make it harder to capture the details that make your pet recognisable. The clearer the photo, the more the artist has to work with.

How a Pet Photo Becomes Embroidery
Turning a photo into an embroidered portrait isn't a direct transfer. Embroidery works with thread and stitching, not pixels, so the artwork needs to be adapted before anything is stitched onto a cap.
When we convert your photo into embroidery-ready artwork, we focus on keeping the most recognisable features of your pet: the overall face shape, key markings, colouring and expression. Fine fur texture, subtle shadows and very small details may be simplified or adjusted so they translate clearly into thread. This is a normal part of the embroidery process, not a limitation of the design.
If you choose 3D Puff Embroidery, selected areas of the design will have a more raised, dimensional finish, while finer facial details remain flatter for clarity. Flat Embroidery creates a smoother stitched finish throughout the design. Both options are available across our cap styles.
Thread colour, texture and the final stitched result may vary slightly from what you see on screen. Your digital preview (covered in the next section) gives you a chance to review the artwork before any stitching begins.
Why the Digital Preview Matters
One of the most important parts of ordering a custom pet hat is being able to see and approve the artwork before your cap goes into production. At 999Tee Canada, that's how the process works.
After you submit your photo and place your order, we create the embroidery-ready artwork and email you a digital preview within 3 business days. You review that preview and let us know if you'd like any changes. The first preview and up to 3 minor revisions are included. If you want a major artwork change or a completely new design direction, that may require an additional charge, and we'll confirm with you before proceeding.
Production only begins after you approve the preview. That means you're not committing to a finished cap based on the photo alone. You get to see the adapted artwork first.

Embroidery vs Printed Pet Portraits
If you're weighing up an embroidered pet portrait against a printed one, the main difference comes down to how the image is applied and how it looks.
Embroidery is stitched directly into the fabric of the cap using thread. Because it's worked in thread rather than ink, fine photographic details like subtle shading or very fine fur are typically simplified into a cleaner, more graphic version of your pet. The result tends to have a distinct texture and a handcrafted character that's different from a print.
A printed pet portrait can often reproduce more photographic detail, including gradients and fine texture. The look is flatter against the fabric compared to the raised texture of embroidery.
Neither is objectively better. It comes down to what you're looking for: a stitched, textured portrait with a crafted feel, or a print that stays closer to the original photograph. Our caps at 999Tee Canada are embroidered, so if that's the look you want, you're in the right place.
Choosing the Right Cap Style
The cap style affects not just how the hat looks and fits, but also how your pet's embroidery presents on the front panel.
We offer three styles at 999Tee Canada:
- Dad cap: An unstructured, 6-panel cap made from cotton twill. The soft front panel gives it a relaxed, casual shape that moulds to your head over time.
- Trucker cap: A structured, 5-panel cap with a corduroy front panel and breathable mesh back. The rigid front panel keeps its shape and gives the embroidery a flat, upright presentation.
- Baseball cap: A structured, 6-panel cap available in suede-finish fabric and denim. It has a more polished look than the trucker cap while still offering a defined front panel for the embroidery.
For a full comparison of how these styles differ in structure, fit, breathability and how they each present a custom pet portrait, read our article: Dad Cap vs Trucker Cap vs Baseball Cap: Which Is Best for a Custom Pet Portrait?

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of photo works best for pet embroidery?
A clear, well-lit photo where your pet's face is visible and facing toward the camera tends to work best. Distinct markings, good contrast and a focused, unobstructed view of the face give the artist more to work with when creating the embroidery artwork. Visit our How It Works page for more guidance on preparing your photo.
Can any pet photo be embroidered on a hat?
Most photos can be worked with, but the result depends on how clearly the pet's features come through in the image. Photos where the face is very small, heavily shadowed or obscured are harder to adapt into clear embroidery artwork. A clearer photo generally gives you a better starting point.
Why does a pet portrait need to be simplified for embroidery?
Embroidery is created with thread and stitching rather than pixels, so it can't reproduce every photographic detail. Fine fur texture, subtle shading and very small features are typically simplified into cleaner shapes that translate well into thread. This adaptation is a normal part of the embroidery process and helps ensure the portrait looks clear and recognisable on the finished cap.
Can I see the artwork before my cap is embroidered?
Yes. At 999Tee Canada, we email you a digital preview of the embroidery artwork within 3 business days of your order. Production only begins after you approve the preview. The first preview and up to 3 minor revisions are included.
Is embroidery better than printing for a pet portrait?
It depends on what you prefer. Embroidery creates a stitched, textured portrait with a handcrafted feel, but fine photographic details like gradients and very fine fur are typically simplified in the process. Printing can reproduce more photographic detail but sits flat against the fabric. If you're drawn to the look and feel of a stitched design, embroidery is a natural choice. Our caps at 999Tee Canada are all embroidered.
Can I order a custom pet hat as a gift?
Yes. A custom embroidered pet hat can make a thoughtful gift for a pet owner. Keep in mind that the process involves uploading a photo and approving a digital preview before production begins, so there's a bit of back-and-forth before the cap is made. Allowing extra time around busy periods is a good idea. Browse the full range in the Custom Pet Portrait Caps collection.
